Three podiums, five PBs and two to Nationals at the NSW PSSA Championships

Seven MESSA athletes made it to the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre on 21 and 22 October, from seven different primary schools. They came home with three podiums, five PBs and one equalled PB, and two of them, Stephen and Paige, are now headed to Nationals in Melbourne later this year. Neither day made it easy: 20 to 23°C with 6.2mm of rain through day one, then 19 to 22°C, drizzle and an easterly around 16km/h on day two.

Stephen Harvey, Beaumont Road

  • 2nd High Jump: 1.43m (PB)
  • 3rd Long Jump: 4.64m (PB)
  • 17th 200m: 28.75s (equals PB)
  • 15th Shot Put 2kg: 9.52m

Stephen Harvey with his high jump silver medal at the NSW PSSA Championships

Second in the state. His high jump has climbed all season: 1.30m at his first meet in August, then 1.36m, 1.38m at Sydney North and now 1.43m. That makes seven PBs from six competitions since August, across sprints, jumps and throws. Stephen's high jump competition came to a halt after an incident at the mat ending his competition, we wish him a speedy recovery for the season ahead and his trip to Nationals.

Paige Liu, Ermington

  • 3rd High Jump: 1.30m

Paige Liu, NSW PSSA high jump bronze, headed to Nationals

Paige and Violet train together, and both cleared 1.30m and missing 1.35m that triggered a 3 way jump off. Paige continued to proceed to Nationals clearing 1.37m. Paige's high jump PB is 1.39m from September, one of four PBs she had this season before state, and three days later she added a long jump PB of 4.10m at Treloar Shield.

Violet Adkin, Richard Johnson

  • 5th High Jump: 1.30m (PB)

A 2cm PB at the state championships having just clipped her 1.35m effort both in regular competition and the jump off. Violet has set nine PBs from five competitions since August: high jump from 1.17m to 1.30m, 100m down to 15.19s, 200m to 32.57s, long jump to 3.50m and 800m to 3:09 in her first season of competition in track and field.

Toby Paton, Five Dock

  • 10th Long Jump: 4.58m (PB)

A 17cm PB, beating the 4.41m he jumped last November. It is his seventh PB this season, with the 100m down to 14.21s, the 200m to 28.88s and the high jump up to 1.35m along the way.

Max Pullin, St Bernard's Berowra

  • 15th Long Jump: 4.62m
  • 20th Discus 750g: 31.27m (PB)
  • 4x100m Relay: 54.27s (school relay PB)

The discus PB moves him 96cm past the 30.31m he threw in September. Six PBs from four competitions this season, including a 4.87m long jump in August.

Huxley Richardson, Asquith

  • 4th Long Jump: 5.00m

Fourth in the state. Huxley's PB is 5.25m, set when he won silver at Sydney North in September, and he has jumped 5.29m in training this month. The Sydney Swans Academy rep will now pivot and focus on his dirty jumps and most likely entertain another quarter mile this track season.

Viaan Pahal, Willoughby

  • 10th Long Jump: 4.30m

Viaan qualified for state with a 4.43m PB at Sydney North and finished tenth in the state final.

Three podiums, five PBs and an equalled best from seven athletes, in the rain, at the state championships. Next up for Stephen and Paige: Nationals in Melbourne.
